Conference Recap: MOVE America 2023

Insights into the Future of Mobility & Smart City Tech

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending MOVE: America 2023, the #1 meeting place for the world's transport tech and mobility companies. There were over 3,600 attendees, 500 speakers, 450 sponsor exhibitors featured, ranging from agile startups all the way to large companies making inroads in sustainability, battery technology, smart city infrastructure, and electric vehicles.

MOVE 2023 was hosted in the Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin, TX

It’s astounding to recognize the sheer number of engineers, scientists, thinkers, and advocates all over the world who are working hard to bring forth solutions for a cleaner and smarter future. We were able to chat 1-on-1 with many of these folks, and had the opportunity to listen to industry experts provide their insights on the problems surrounding micromobility, transportation technology, urban infrastructure, and policy.

Here’s a list of the most crucial problems we identified:

🔋 Exploring safer, better battery technologies & the development of new materials

🚗 Removing bottlenecks in battery supply chains to meet growing EV market demand

🏙️ Providing accessibility electric mobility options to all urban residents

⚡️ Thinking about the potential impact large-scale electric infrastructure has on the grid

🏫 Driving adoption of & educating stakeholders on electrified infrastructure

And here’s a list of some of the organizations who are making it their mission to provide innovative solutions and insights into these problems:

  • H.B. Fuller: Building safer, more efficient, and lighter batteries for the future

  • Lyten: Transforming greenhouse gasses into graphene for use in lithium-sulfur batteries

  • Fermata Energy: Transforming EVs into valuable energy storage assets for the grid through V2X solutions

  • Tubular Network: Providing an integrated network of new logistics systems for the delivery of goods in a more reliable and sustainable manner

  • Voltpost: Turning lamp posts into EV chargers to decarbonize cities and make charging more accessible

  • Adamas Intelligence: Helping clients make informed decisions involving rare-earth metals & their supply chains for EV battery manufacturing

  • WiTricity: Accelerating the adoption of EVs through integrated wireless charging solutions for consumers & fleets

  • Whizz: Democratizing the transportation industry for urban delivery drivers by offering affordable & accessible micromobility systems

  • Shared-Use Mobility Center: Providing testbeds to help connect the growing shared mobility industry with transit agencies, cities and communities across the nation

  • ENRX: Speeding up the journey to a sustainable world through integrated, wireless power transfer from roadways to vehicles

We hope to have the privilege of featuring these companies and their brilliant teams in upcoming newsletters, so stay tuned by subscribing if you’re interested in learning more!

As always, we’ll leave you with a few key takeaways to think about. While the future of smart cities, renewable energy, and electric transportation seems promising, it’s going to be a tricky road to navigate without considering certain barriers.

  1. How will we reduce our reliance on overseas suppliers and manufacturers for critical use components in EVs, such as batteries?

  2. How do we delicately balance the transition to cleaner, smarter cities without upsetting our dependence on existing infrastructure?

  3. What external factors might affect government policies and programs that are, for now, aiding in building out technologies for EVs, charging infrastructure, and shared-use mobility programs?

That’s all for now! For the next post, we’re planning an exciting tech-focused topic, so if that’s your thing, remember to keep an eye on our page.

Also, big thanks to Terrapin for hosting the event and providing us the opportunity to network with such bright minds!
